Alan C. Heuberger ’96 (Co-Chair)

Senior Manager – Investment Team, BMGI

Alan Heuberger joined BMGI in 1996 and currently serves as a senior manager on the investment team involved in all aspects of portfolio management.  He provides oversight on a variety of direct private equity and real asset portfolio investments, including BMGI’s agriculture and commercial real estate investments.

BMGI is responsible for all of Bill Gates’ non-Microsoft investments as well as all of the investments of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.  BMGI primarily invests for the long term with a focus on fundamental analysis.  Investments span all major asset classes including public and private equity, fixed income, real estate, commodities, and currencies.

Mr. Heuberger received a B.A. degree in Economics and Mathematics from Claremont McKenna College.  He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1999.


John R. Shrewsberry ’87 (Co-Chair)

Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Wells Fargo & Company

Senior Executive Vice President John Shrewsberry is the chief financial officer responsible for Wells Fargo’s financial management functions including accounting and control, financial planning and analysis, line of business finance functions, asset-liability management, treasury, tax management, investor relations, and the company’s investment portfolios. John is also responsible for Wells Fargo’s corporate development, information technology, corporate properties and security, corporate strategy and enterprise expense and efficiency functions. John serves on the Wells Fargo Operating, Management, and Market Risk Committees and is based in San Francisco.

A 21-year veteran of banking and investing, John served as head of Wells Fargo Securities from 2006 through May 2014, where he was responsible for investment banking, capital markets, institutional fixed income, equity, derivatives sales and trading, investment research, and a credit-intensive principal investment portfolio. From 2001 through 2005, he was the group head of Wells Fargo Commercial Capital, the successor to a commercial finance company he cofounded that became part of Wells Fargo in 2001. Previously, John worked at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston in the principal finance areas. He started his career as a Certified Public Accountant at Coopers & Lybrand.

John earned his B.A. in economics from Claremont McKenna College and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management.

John currently serves on the board for the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. Committed to serving the communities around him, John also serves on the boards of the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, the Yale School of Management, the Yale Corporation Investment Committee and is active with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.



Gary Birkenbeuel ’80

Partner, Ernst & Young, LLP

Profile and clients served

  • Gary has more than 36 years of public accounting experience and has been a partner since 1992. He serves both publicly and privately held companies engaged in the aerospace and defense, entertainment and technology industries.   Extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and accounting and auditing issues related to clients served.  Has led multi-location audits for most of his career.  Complex issue resolution with a broad network of knowledge of the firm’s global resources.
  • Gary’s current and former clients include: Lockheed Martin (1980-1987), GenCorp/Aerojet (Coordinating Partner 1995-1999), TRW Space and Defense Division (1998-2002), Northrop Grumman (2002-2004) (Sarbanes Oxley implementation) and Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (2009-present). Other clients have included: Los Angeles Dodgers, Lions Gate Entertainment, Peterson Publishing and Earthlink.

  • Pacific South West Area Industry Leader for Technology, Commnications and Entertainment 1997-2002. Led our efforts during the internet boom of the 1990s and the consolidation in the early 2000s.
  • Pacific South West Assurance and Advisory Business Services Managing Partner 2002-2008. Led over 1200 professionals from Denver to Hawaii.
  • Financial Advisory Assurance Services (FAAS) Leader 2008-2011. Co-led the start-up of our FAAS group from inception.  Began with 20 people and $5 million in revenues.  Over 500 people and $300 million in revenues in 2016.
  • Assurance Strategic Resources Leader 2012 to present. Leads the Americas Audit efforts for our largest client rotations.  Managing partner for all audit expatriates.  Leads our Talent Hub efforts in India for the audit practice.

Baxter Brinkmann P’16

Founder and CEO, J. Baxter Brinkmann International Corporation (JBBI)

  1. Baxter Brinkmann is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of J. Baxter Brinkmann International Corporation (JBBI). Since 1975, Mr. Brinkmann has led the development of the Brinkmann companies into some of the more recognizable brands in outdoor consumer products, including cooking, lighting, camping and pet.

Mr. Brinkmann is a successful real estate investor, having holdings in several states.  Located in the top growth cities of Frisco and McKinney, just north of Dallas, the 5,500 acre Brinkmann Ranches are home to world champion Quarter Horses, Black Angus and Longhorn Cattle operations and agribusiness.

Long active in the community, Mr. Brinkmann has served as a planning and zoning commission chairman, as well as participating in education initiatives at area schools.

Mr. Brinkmann has served on various boards including the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, The Greenhill School of Dallas, the Cardiopulmonary Research Science & Technology Institute, and The Dallas Regional Chamber.  Currently, he is active and maintains a leadership role within The Frisco Chamber of Commerce.

Prior to founding the J. Baxter Brinkmann International Corporation, Mr. Brinkmann was a private equity professional and portfolio manager at John M. Hartwell & Company in New York.



Alan M. Delsman ’68

Senior Credit Executive, Deutsche AG, New York

In 2001 Mr. Delsman joined Deutsche Bank as Chief Credit Officer for Latin America.  His current role is Senior Credit Executive responsible for large, complex transactions in the Emerging Markets, Investment Grade Corporations, Leverage Finance, Real Estate, and Financial Institutions.

Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Mr. Delsman worked for The Chase Manhattan Bank, where he held a variety of positions that included assignments in Tehran, London, Panama, Miami and New York.  His last position was the Senior Credit Officer for the Global Markets business in Emerging Markets.

Mr. Delsman graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a B.A. in International Relations in 1968 and from the University of Washington with an M.A. in Political Science in 1970.



Maureen Downey ’93

Maureen graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics / Economics from Claremont McKenna College. Maureen has more than two decades of experience in global finance and private equity investing in both developed and emerging economies.  Maureen possesses a global perspective given much of her career has been spent living and working internationally across multiple cultures.  She has a track record of success demonstrated through increasing levels of responsibility in investment, new business development and capital raising roles.

As an equity principal at Pantheon Ventures, Maureen made secondary, primary and co-investments in developed and emerging markets and was a member of the co-investment and emerging markets investment committees.  Maureen was also responsible business development in new markets, business lines and products for Pantheon.  Her strong commercial ability enabled her to identify and develop new business opportunities in Latin America, structure partnerships, create bespoke products and fundraise in multiple geographies as well as co-lead the launch of Pantheon’s first Global Emerging Markets fund.

Prior to joining Pantheon, Maureen was a Vice President in Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs, & Co, working in London, Paris and San Francisco.  Maureen’s execution experience includes a variety of cross-border and domestic M&A and leveraged buy-out transactions, debt restructuring assignments as well as a broad spectrum of capital market financings from equity to high yield across multiple industries.  Given her leveraged finance and M&A background, Maureen worked extensively with private equity firms.  Before joining Goldman Sachs in 1998, Maureen worked for Merrill Lynch in New York in their Fixed Income Division.

She holds an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from The Wharton Graduate School of Business.



Russell Greenberg ’79 P’18

Managing Partner, Altus Capital Partners

Managing Partner Russell J. Greenberg has over 30 years of experience in private equity and buyout investing. He co-founded Altus Capital Partners in 2003 to continue the proven investment strategy of his previous fund, Max Capital Partners.

Through more than 100 buyouts corporate finance and merger transactions with an aggregate value of more than $6 billion, Russ brings a broad perspective on proven private equity investing in both strong and weak economic periods. He believes in combining capital with talented management to develop companies and build shareholder value.

Before forming the Altus Capital and Max Capital funds, Russ held executive positions at investment banks including Brean Murray Securities Inc.; Daiwa Securities America Inc.; and Prudential-Bache Capital Securities.

Russ is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College with an honors degree in Economics and holds an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

As Managing Partner at Altus Capital Partners, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of GED Integrated Solutions, Inc. and Nichols Portland, Inc. He serves on the Board of International Imaging Materials, Inc., Prism Plastics, Inc., Rocla Concrete Tie, Inc., and Thomson Plastics, Inc.



Christopher D. Harris ’98

Partner, Damitz, Brooks, Nightingale, Turner & Morrisset

Chris is an audit partner with Damitz, Brooks, Nightingale, Turner & Morrisset and who joined the Santa Barbara based firm in 2012 after more than 12 years of public accounting experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP in Los Angeles.  He has more than 18 years of experience in public accounting, during which he provided a variety of assurance services including audits, reviews, agreed upon procedures, and internal control assessments.  His industry experience encompasses a broad range of industries including service, entertainment, consumer product, and technology companies as well as not-for-profit organizations, higher education entities, health care organizations, and employee benefit plans.

Chris has both developed and instructed technical professional development programs for various financial reporting and internal control related topics.  He is an instructor for the CalCPA’s Auditing Standards and Auditing Principles discussion group and has been a contributor to Wiley’s Financial and Accounting Guide for Not-for-Profit Organizations.

Chris received his Bachelor of the Arts in Economics and Accounting degree (magna cum laude) from Claremont McKenna College.  He is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

In addition to being a board member for Claremont McKenna’s Financial Economics Institute, Chris has been an active participant in a number of community service endeavors including the United Way, Girls Inc., and the Santa Barbara Bike Coalition.  He also serves as a board member, volunteer, and treasurer for Santa Barbara Meals on Wheels, C.A.R.E.4Paws, and the Santa Barbara Symphony.  In his free time Chris is a passionate cyclist.



Stella Ho ’97

Managing Director, LightBay Capital

As of March 1, 2017, Ms. Ho became the Managing Director of LightBay Capital in Los Angeles, CA.  Previously, she was a Senior Vice President in Business Management at Moelis & Company.  She joined the firm in 2009 and, at that point, had been in the investment banking industry for over 10 years.  From 2004 to 2008, Ms. Ho was a Director and Business Manager for UBS Investment Bank, overseeing operations for the Los Angeles and San Francisco offices as well as the Global Technology Investment Banking Group. Prior to this, she was an Associate Director in the Investment Banking Division at UBS from 2002 to 2004 and a Senior Associate Consultant in the Financial Advisory Services Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers from 1997 to 2000.

Ms. Ho holds a B.A. in Economics-Accounting, Cum Laude from Claremont McKenna College and an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.



Ben Hunsaker ’06

Portfolio Manager and Head of Structured Products, Beach Point Capital Management 

Ben Hunsaker is a Portfolio Manager and Head of Structured Products at Beach Point Capital Management.  Mr. Hunsaker was previously a Portfolio Manager at Western Asset Management (WAMCO) where he was responsible for structured products. Prior to WAMCO, he was a Senior Analyst at Countrywide Securities Corporation in the structured finance and banking group responsible for securitizing ABS and MBS.

Mr. Hunsaker is also a CFA Charterholder and GARP certified Financial Risk Manager. Mr. Hunsaker is the Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors for the non-profit organization, Uncommon Good, and serves on the Board of Directors for Visio Financial Services. Mr. Hunsaker received a Bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA from the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.



Susan Matteson King ’86 P’18

Managing Director and Head of Sales Strategy & Marketing, UBS Asset Management Americas

Ms. Susan Matteson King is Managing Director and Head of Sales Strategy and Marketing with UBS Asset Management Americas. She is responsible for developing and implementing sales strategies and campaigns to drive significant growth of the asset management business in the Americas.

Ms. King was previously a managing director and head of Americas marketing with Allianz Global Investors. In addition, she worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management as the global head of marketing, Legg Mason and its predecessor, Citigroup Asset Management, as head of marketing for U.S. Distribution, at Alliance in several marketing- and product-focused roles, and as an investment banker at Paine Webber in New York and Hong Kong. She has 30 years of investment-industry experience.

Ms. King has a B.A. in economics from Claremont McKenna College, where she is president of the CMC Alumni Association. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Claremont McKenna College. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Claremont McKenna College Alumni Association since 2006 and served as an alumna trustee of the College from 2006 to 2009.

Christine Huk Mann ’87

Vice President in Private Wealth Management, Goldman Sachs & Co.

Ms. Mann is a Vice President in Private Wealth Management at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York. She has over 25 years of finance and tax experience and today co-leads an Investment Management Team focused primarily on providing solutions for families, business executives, foundations, and endowments.

Ms. Mann joined Goldman Sachs in 2000 From Banc of America Securities where she worked in fixed income. Ms. Mann began her career as a CPA with a focus on taxation.  She is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College and the University of Chicago.

Ms. Mann serves on the Financial Economics Institute Advisory Board and the Alumni Association Board.  She has served as an Alumni Trustee on the CMC Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board of Robert Day School. She lives in Chatham, New Jersey with her husband Ray and two sons. Locally, Ms. Mann is a Win Partner, a group committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness for women and children in New York City.


James B. McElwee ’74 P’12

Independent Venture Capitalist, Former General Partner of Weston Presidio

James McElwee currently operates as an independent venture capitalist in Northern California with more than 35 years of experience in venture capital and private equity.

Mr. McElwee joined Weston Presidio as its third General Partner in 1992 serving until 2010. He was responsible for Weston Presidio’s private investments in Digital Theater Systems (NASDAQ: DTSI), RedEnvelope (NASDAQ: REDE), Vitria Technology (NASDAQ: VITR), Wild Oats Markets (NASDAQ: OATS), IC Works (acquired by Cypress Semiconductor), and Sassaby (Jane) (acquired by Estee Lauder).

During his tenure as a General Partner and member of its Investment Committee, Weston Presidio led the start up financing of JetBlue Airways and made investments in Fender Musical Instruments, The Coffee Connection (acquired by Starbucks), Guitar Center, Mapquest (acquired by AOL), Party City, Petzazz (acquired by PetSmart), RE/MAX, and many other companies. The firm raised five funds totaling over $3.5 billion in assets. Mr. McElwee opened Weston Presidio’s Menlo Park Office in 2000.

Prior to Weston Presidio, Mr. McElwee was Senior Vice President of the Security Pacific Venture Capital Group and the founding Managing Director of its Menlo Park office. During his 13 years with the Security Pacific Venture Capital Group, Mr. McElwee was responsible for early private investments in Costco, Universal Health Services, Cypress Semiconductor, Aspect Telecommunications, Xilinx, MIPS Computer Systems, Harmonic, Microchip, Vitesse and many others. Prior to entering the venture capital industry in 1979, Mr. McElwee was a Senior Consultant with Accenture, building information systems for a variety of clients in the retailing, healthcare and technology industries.

Mr. McElwee currently serves on the Board of Directors of Silego (mixed signal semiconductors) and Avinger (medical devices) (NASDAQ) and is an investor in Blue Bottle Coffee and several other private companies. From 2005 to 2014, he served as a Board Member and Treasurer of SFJAZZ, the non-profit organization responsible for the San Francisco Jazz Festival and construction of the SFJAZZ Center. Mr. McElwee also currently serves on the Board of Healthright 360, a family of programs that includes Walden House, Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Asian American Recovery Services, and Rock Medicine.

Mr. McElwee earned his B.A. from Claremont McKenna College where he serves on the Board of Trustees and is a member of the Investment Committee. Mr. McElwee earned his MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business where he serves on the Wharton Entrepreneurial Board.


Paul H. Nathan ’80

President, Ledex Consulting Corporation

Paul began his career at Bank Julius Baer New York in the Foreign Exchange and Futures/Options trading department eventually rising to the role of Senior Vice-President in charge of the trading desk.  During that period Paul started the offshore fund administration business for Bank Julius Baer based on the demand from hedge fund managers.  In 1994, he founded his own consulting firm, which specializes in working with hedge fund managers in establishing complicated structures for offshore funds as well as assisting them in accessing their risk/control functions.  Currently Paul serves as a director in numerous hedge funds around the world.

Paul received an MBA with honors from New York University in 1982. He graduated in 1980 Cum Laude with a degree in economics from Claremont McKenna College.  Since graduation, Paul has been involved with the college in various capacities. Presently he is a Keck Institute as well as a CMCAA Board Member. In May 2017, he was elected to the Parkinson’s Foundation Board of Directors.



Robert P. Thomas ’99

Chief Investment Officer, The George Kaiser Family Foundation

Mr. Robert Thomas serves as the Chief Investment Officer for George Kaiser Family Foundation. Mr. Thomas is responsible for the financial administration and management of its $4 billion investment portfolio. For the previous 10 years, he served as a Portfolio Manager for the Bill Gates Investment Office (aka Cascade Investment). The Gates office invests the personal assets of Mr. Gates, as well as the assets of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In his capacity working for BGI/Cascade, he held several different Portfolio Manager positions, with the most recent responsibility for oversight of all externally managed fund relationships (public and private). Previous areas of responsibility have included energy/commodities, fixed income, currencies and general public and private equity analysis.

He serves as a Director at Memjet, Ltd. He is a Member of the Oklahoma State Treasurers Investment Advisory Council and a Board of Advisors Member for the Financial Economics Institute at Claremont McKenna College. Mr. Thomas is President of the Board of Directors of Undercroft Montessori School in Tulsa, Oklahoma and serves as Chairman for the Board of City Year Tulsa.  Mr. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Claremont McKenna College, Magna Cum Laude and is a CFA Charterholder.
